Throughout history, different parts of the present territory of Romania were in or under the administration of Dacia, the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire or the Austrian. As a sovereign state, Romania appeared in 1859 through the union of Romanian and Moldovan Land led by Alexandru Ioan Cuza was independently recognized 19 years later. In 1918, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with Romania, but Romania Mare was destroyed at the end of World War II, when the USSR occupied Bessarabia and northern Bukovina and Romania signed the Warsaw Pact. At the time of disintegration of the Soviet Union and the removal of the communist regime installed in Romania (1989), the country initiated a series of economic and political reforms.
